Leadership Quotations

How can I get my team more motivated? They make good money.

Teams are motivated because individuals are motivated. Research tells us that the best managers in the world are skilled in determining what motivates each person and therefore there needs to be a game plan for each person. Motivation is a direct result of need and want satisfaction, so if I think I need security then that motivates me and if I think I need a lot of public recognition then that motivates me. For example: Some people thrive on public recognition while others can’t stand the thought of standing on a stage and receiving an award. So if the financial aspect is well covered in your organization (and you know this as opposed to just thinking it), then you have to find out what motivates each person. And the place to start with that is by asking them. They may or may not tell you straight out, but normally will respond to surveys and questions posed.

Strategically speaking, motivated business teams are teams where the individual has a voice. Developing an organizational culture and systems where all employees are heard is the biggest challenge American companies face today. If you want to find out more about this read “The Toyota Way” and discover why the new turnaround CEO of Ford Motor Company has publicly stated that he plans to follow Toyota’s lead in how to run a car company. That’s a pretty bold and humble thing to say.

Why do we make plans and then do the same old thing year after year?

Many a strategic plan sits on the shelf without being implemented. The reason for this is that everyone gets caught up in the standard fire drills of everyday business. And I guarantee that that business has no management system. The strtategic plan must be broken down into manageable parts and it must be included in everyone’s measurable objectives. Each manager is then responsible to hold their direct report accountable to meet those agreed upon goals and objectives. It’s easy to fall into the same old pattern, but breaking the mold is always tough and requires that accountability piece to get over the hump. Why do you think professional athlete’s hire trainers when they already know what needs to be done? Often it’s to provide that extra push to get them where they want to be.

Why don’t my employees think like me?

Well first of all they are employees and they don’t own the company. Even if you are in a non profit organization, you are comparing them to you and that’s a big mistake. You got where you are because you solve problems better than the next guy. Or you took a risk that others are simply not willing to take. That’s why you’re where you are and they are where they are. Now that you are in the top position because you rose to the occasion IT IS YOUR JOB TO MANAGE THEM TO GET TO THEIR PEAK PERFORMANCE. It’s not about you anymore, it’s about them. So get busy with figuring out what makes them tick
